What are the different types of towel?

types of towel

Whether you’re working out, having a bath or cooking in the kitchen, there is probably a towel nearby waiting to be used. As one of our versatile and dependable household items, the humble towel has a wide range of different uses and can come in a wide range of shapes and sizes.

This blog will break down the different types of towel in our collection at My Printed Clothing so that you can choose the best towel for your needs.

Face cloth

The face cloth, sometimes referred to as a face towel or a flannel, is the smallest towel available, usually measuring at 30 x 30cm. Face cloths are used to – as the name suggests – wash and cleanse the face, removing dirt, makeup and impurities. This is why most face cloths you see available are made from 100% cotton or bamboo as these raw materials are gentle on the skin.

Tea towel

Tea towels were originally employed to cover hot-baked products during tea ceremonies in the 18th century, however, are now used for various kitchen tasks like wiping up spills, drying kitchenware and covering food to keep it fresh. Tea towels are light, absorbent cloths, typically made of linen or cotton and tend to come in a wide variety of textures, colours and prints and thus can even be used as decoration!

Sports towel

Sports towels or gym towels are specialised towels used during physical activity, usually to absorb sweat. They tend to be made from cotton, however, can also be available in linen, bamboo and microfibre. Sports towels are designed to be lightweight and quick-drying, ideal for popping into your gym back before a workout.

Cooling towel

Cooling towels are another excellent form of towel to take with you when working out. All you need to do is soak the towel in water for two or three minutes, wring it dry and then wrap it around wherever you want relief. They work like flexible ice packs, fantastic for sore muscles or for cooling down on a hot summer’s day!

Hand towel

Hand towels are commonly seen in bathrooms and used to dry your hands after washing them. They tend to measure around 50 x 90 cm but can come in a  wide range of colours, materials and sizes.

Hair wrap

Hair wraps are a great alternative to heavy bath towels if you have long hair you need to dry. These towels are used to wrap around the hair and speed up the drying process, so they need to be thin and easy to twist. They tend to be more absorbent and gentler on the hair than traditional bath towels which not only reduces the drying time but also minimises frizz and breakage.

Bath towel/ Bath sheet

Bath towels typically measure smaller than bath sheets, however the serve the same purpose – to help you dry off after a shower or bath! These large towels can come in a wide variety of materials depending on how soft and absorbent you want them to be.

At My Printed Clothing, we offer a range of luxurious towels, all of which can be embroidered with your own branding or art work. So, whether you need custom towels for your gym or personalised towels for your hotel, you’re sure to find the perfect towel in our collection!
